Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans)
The engagement Maplyzer was built from and the one still shaping the platform today.
The Starting Point
Maplyzer is a startup venture co-founded by Dr. Wshah and Dr. Shadid, stemming from a collaborative effort with the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans). The objective was to meet VTrans' data storage and road asset visualization requirements, applying machine learning models developed at Dr. Wshah's laboratory to recognize street assets from the volume of imagery VTrans collects every year across Vermont's roads.
What Came Out of It
- A partnership with VTrans that ran from 2018 through 2023.
- VTrans relies on Maplyzer's prototypes and functionality for daily operational work.
- Maplyzer as a company was founded on the strength of that deployment.
- Five years of research sign detection, geolocalization, and tracking presented at the GIS-T Symposium from 2019 through 2023.
Where It Stands Today
That work is the foundation of the platform's Roadway, Asset, and Corridor Intelligence modules: the same detection and geolocalization approach built and validated on Vermont's road network. A dedicated team of seven now works on extending it to other agencies with different networks, imagery, and data needs.
